April 2009
All the BSAs are gone . the same reasons I got into Beems nearly 40 years ago stills stands .
A few memories , old and new . The Honda had a turbo and Joe Hunt magneto hanging off it for a while . This made it fun to ride on the road and dont really remember anything going past it off the line . I de-tuned it survive Sydney traffic and the "other" Honda riders in blue.
The Katana had a beautiful engine but handled like a pig. Its obvious why Suzuki engines end up drag racing . The R100RS got the crap flogged out of it but never let me down .
"What do you like about Beems ?"
Started my working life as a mechanic working 6 days a week and loved Triumphs ( still do ) . On Any Sunday morning wanted to get up at some crazy hour and head off for a ride , 5 or 600 klm wasnt out of the question .
Nah , was down in Mildura working on a grape farm (late 60s) , saved up enough money to buy a bike and ride it back to Sydney. Went out to a farm and fell in love with an R60 tha was being sold to allow Mum to send the money overseas to the owner ( her son ) to pay for his fares home . Uncle Pete talked me out of it "too big , too expensive" and I ended up buying a T20 Hustler instead . YEP , still crying 40 years later . Character building !!
The BMW R75/5 LWB below is by far the best all round bike I have owned . The dorky photo is for Two Wheels magazine 1974 issue April from memory. Ill find one similar , OS maybe !
Just ride them to where you want to go , simple. R100RS , this thing got flogged and was ridden to where road bikes should have never gone . The photo of Amanda and I was taken at Winton Caravan Park staying in the GREEN TURTLE . We had just done about 1600k in a day without her making a sound ! Amanda I mean , not the bike , wonder whats she is up to now ?
And we wont talk about if I still owned an R90S with Krauser mags and a rear disc setup .
750 Katana , nice motors and we wont talk about early jap frames and handling quirks .
